Gay conversion therapy and other sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) still happen in Australia. It is harmful and has been discredited, and in some cases, can amount to torture. Young people are often the target of the so-called therapy, and they can carry trauma related to it for their whole lives.

This is a really important step to end a horrific practice. Conversion therapies have been used by the state in the past and religious groups now to continue the persecution of LGBT people. We even used to have a “gay” prison at Cooma that opened in 1957, where the “causes and treatment of homosexuality” were explored – none of this research was conclusive. Major international psych governing bodies have rejected conversion therapies. New thinking on Queer theory and history suggests there is such thing as a fixed sexual orientation anyway. These practices need to be banned in Australia.
